Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) has sparked controversy after making disparaging comments about Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who uses a wheelchair due to an accident over 40 years ago.
The Texas Democrat’s remarks, made during a Human Rights Campaign event in Los Angeles over the weekend, have drawn sharp criticism from both Republicans and disability advocates.
Crockett, in what some are calling a thoughtless remark, referred to Gov. Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels,” further mocking him by saying, “And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot ass mess, honey.”
Abbott, who became paraplegic at age 26 when a large oak tree fell on him during a jog, has since become a prominent figure in Texas politics, known for his conservative stances on issues such as gun control, immigration, and voting rights.
The comments, which quickly circulated online, have ignited a firestorm of backlash from GOP lawmakers and conservative figures. Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas) has announced plans to introduce a censure resolution against Crockett, condemning her remarks as discriminatory and an example of the “venomous rhetoric” she regularly uses.
Weber called on the House to reprimand the Dallas congresswoman for her “despicable political attacks,” claiming that Crockett’s behavior is unbecoming of a representative and unworthy of the respect expected from public officials.
Many Republican leaders have also voiced their disdain. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton labeled Crockett’s comments as “despicable,” while U.S. Sen. John Cornyn called the remarks “shameful.”
Some critics have even suggested that Crockett’s words reflect the broader negative trends within the Democratic Party, with one spokesperson from the National Republican Congressional Committee accusing her of lacking a meaningful political agenda and resorting to “hate” in place of constructive discourse.
Crockett has become known for her fiery rhetoric and outspokenness, especially against Republicans. In the past, she has drawn attention for her sharp criticisms of former President Donald Trump and other GOP figures, even going viral for her pointed exchanges during committee hearings.
Her bold approach has earned her both supporters and detractors. Despite the intense backlash, Crockett’s office has not yet issued an official statement addressing the controversy.
The remarks are not the first time Abbott’s disability has been mocked in political circles. In 2019, then-Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt issued a public apology after making a joke about Abbott’s injury, and other instances of similar comments have drawn criticism in recent years. Critics argue that such behavior perpetuates ableism and undermines the dignity of those living with disabilities.
While Crockett’s comments may have been intended as a humorous jibe, many argue that mocking a disability crosses a line. Disability advocates and many from across the political spectrum have expressed concern about the impact such rhetoric could have on public perceptions of those with physical disabilities.
Abbott, for his part, has yet to publicly respond to Crockett’s remarks, choosing instead to remain silent on the issue. As for Crockett, her political future remains to be seen as her outspoken style continues to attract both admiration and controversy.
